From his 2006 debut Lil Folk to last year's blues-hop Lone Wolf album to this year's Metal Tiger EP courtesy of his band The Milky Way, NC-born, NYC-groomed, L.A. residing lyric laureate Sum has made it his business to confound expectations. Now he presents The Nobody Hole, a dark hip-hop opera and all-out experiment in songwriting, storytelling and visual art. For years after this project was first revealed to the public in 2006, The Nobody Hole was only given to a select group of people. Although available for streaming for the whole world to listen to, the project was never available for download. Until now.
The story follows the main character, Pygmy Paul, through a twisted world that is a shadow of our own. This isn't a loose concept album, rather a literary piece set to music. Borrowing themes from Alice in Wonderland, Edgar Allan Poe, Star Wars, ancient mythologies, fables and many other influences, The Nobody Hole tells a somewhat familiar tale in a totally new way. All music is composed entirely by Brooklyn-based producer Badtouch. All songs and narration is penned by Sum, and the story is told through rhyme, song and lyric. The download contains lyrics and narration for the entire opera, as well as individual artwork for each song, courtesy of the Nobody Hole artists Doug Hoffman, Jared Rogness, Jeffrey Hurst and Jerome Lewis.
