Press Release: MGK Wins MTVU "Breaking Woodie" Award at SXSW

Press Release: MGK Wins MTVU "Breaking Woodie" Award at SXSW

Courtesy Greg Miller.

EST 19XX/Bad Boy/Interscope recording artist MGK struck victory again this year winning the coveted mtvU "Breaking Woodie" Award given to the best emerging artist, besting A$AP Rocky, Fun., The Weeknd, Meek Mill, Azealia Banks, Iggy Azalea and others, at the "2012 mtvU Woodie Awards" which took place during the SXSW Music Festival last week.

This is MGK's second win with the network after being voted MTV News' 2011 "Hottest Breakthrough MC" of the year. The Woodie Award win comes days before MGK releases his Half Naked & Almost Famous EP on Tuesday, March 20th and sets out on a record-breaking "2012 Hostile Takeover" tour with Strange Music artist Tech N9ne. With 90 performances in 99 days, the "2012 Hostile Takeover" tour is the longest consecutive run in rap history.

MGK is thrilled to be releasing the EP to his fans. "We recorded the Half Naked EP and my upcoming Lace Up album in the basement of a friend's house in Cleveland," states MGK. "We only dreamed of the Lace Up Movement coming this far in such a short amount of time. I want to thank everyone that has supported and helped me get to this point. It's only the beginning, so Lace the F*ck Up!"

The Half Naked & Almost Famous EP features MGK's smash single "Wild Boy" that spawned a #1 voted BET 106 and Park music video. While at SXSW last week, MGK filmed a music video for the remix version of the track featuring electrifying artists 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Mystikal, French Montana and Yo Gotti.  The video also features MTV Jackass celebrity Steve-O who is referenced to on the original track. The remix music video will premiere in the coming weeks.

MGK's song "Invincible"-available at all digital retailers-also captured multiple wins this year. It was selected by both Verizon Wireless as the backdrop for the HTC Rezound 3G smartphone campaign and by the WWE as a theme song to Wrestlemania XXVIII. As part of MGK's partnership with the WWE, he appeared on USA Network's WWE Monday Night Raw on March 12th when it filmed in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. As well, he will make an appearance at Wrestlemania XXVIII on April 1st in Miami, FL.

Today, March 19th at 12pm PST, an MGK 'Cap That' promotion will go live that will allow fans to choose their favorite screenshot of the "Wild Boy" music video and order a poster or canvas with the image. This new technology will empower viewers to access the music video with frame-by-frame functionality to create one-of-a-kind products and share their visual creations across their social networks.

MGK is in the midst of an extensive touring schedule this year. Last month, he performed at college campuses across the country on the Vice Magazine / Project X Party Legends College Tour. He had multiple performances at SXSW including the SOB showcase, BET Music Matters, Woodie Award Festival and the VEVO showcase. MGK will also be on the Van's Warped Tour this summer. On March 22nd, he sets off on the 2012 "Hostile Takeover" tour and hopes to extend his already established fan base in various markets.  For 2012 Hostile Takeover tour dates and ticket information, visit: http://www.mgklaceup.com/sweeps/ .

NEW YORK, NY – Doc J, the buzzed about New York native rap / emcee recording artist who is famously known for being a devoted pediatrician by day and heavy hitting underground hip-hop artist by night, has announced the release of his much anticipated debut self-titled EP on April 3.  Dr. Lewis Jassey, aka "Doc J", is a skilled hip-hop artist, respected pediatrician, and charitable philanthropist who is making his mark on the world by doing something that has never been done before:  being the first licensed medical doctor to succeed in the rap game. Making people feel good with his stethoscope, as well as a microphone is the spark that lights Doc J’s fire.

By day he is known as Dr. Lewis Jassey, a renowned doctor from Long Island, NY, who heals sick children and runs a pediatric practice of more than 10,000 patients for over 17 years. By night he becomes “Doc J”, the respected recording artist who has been involved in the NYC rap scene for over 2 decades and has collaborated with notable underground artists such as MC AWOL, Big Posse, Nyche, Mr. Majestik, Wonder, 1st Ave, and Jae Tips. As a pediatrician and role model for today's youth, Doc J tries to deliver positive messages through hip-hop music.

Doc J's musical roots stemmed from his early love of 80's rock bands such as Van Halen, Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard, but he credits the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy as some of his biggest influences for the hip hop music that he creates today.  Doc J’s rock infused influences are emanated in the songs being released on his debut EP.  Lyrically, Doc J’s rhymes depict his real life encounters which listeners will find to be relatable, inspiring, and often times humorous.  However, his collaborative tracks are straight up club anthems that are blazing with infectious hooks and choruses.

Doc J has parlayed his medical background, and causes that are dear to him, with his love for hip-hop. He has headlined at the biggest fundraising walks of the year for Lou Gehrig's Disease and Autism, as well as performed at a camp for kids with cancer and headlined the American Cancer Society’s annual walk in Central Park in front of 50,000 people.  Doc J has also been featured twice on NBC-TV in New York, as well as TV News 12 Long Island.

For more than 20 years, Doc J has worked closely with producer Garth Mitchell to create a catalogue of over 250 recorded songs, but has yet to release a single record…until now.  Doc J’s long awaited debut self-titled EP will be released on April 3, 2012 to help kick-off of Autism Awareness Month.

Doc J EP Track Listing:

1)  Contagious
2)  Frozen
3)  Just A Lil Bit
4)  Mind Over Money
5)  B.O.S.S.
6) Lost Cause

BONUS TRACK: “Now I’m On”

The mad rush of MarsCon is over and now the mad rush to get ready for I-CON begins.  I have 3 one-hour concerts to prepare for.  (Yeesh!)  But first, news!

--== NEW CIRQUE DU SO WHAT CD AVAILABLE ==--
In case you’re unaware besides doing the comedy rap thing I also do the sketch comedy thing along with my good friends Shoebox of Worm Quartet, the great Luke Ski, and Chris Mezzolesta of Power Salad.  Last June we all got together and recorded a bunch of awesome sketches.  There was so much hilarity, insanity, and profanity that we decided to break up the release into two CDs.  Last summer we released volume 1.  Volume 2 is now available!

Stupid Cowboy Thing, Volume 2: Additional Squid is now available for your listening pleasure.  The album features over an hour of sketch comedy goodness including more appearances by the Tiile Guy, more Guess The Contexts, and more sketches that end with Luke Ski flipping out at the rest of us in a tantric rage.  It features sketches like “Green Eggs and Peas” (which Dr. Demento just played on his show this past weekend), “Let’s Do Improv” (which you can hear on The FuMP), “How To Speak ShoEboX” (which you can hear on this week’s Manic Mondays) and many many more.

The album is available on CD for $14.99 or as a high quality MP3 download for $9.99.  You can order either version from from the store at The FuMP here: http://www.thefump.com/store_release.php?id=98

--== I-CON ==--
I-CON is apparently trying to test my lung capacity this year as they have scheduled me for 3 separate one hour shows, plus an appearance in the Cabaret.  Here is my schedule for the weekend:

Friday: 10pm - 11pm (Javits 101)
Saturday: 2pm - 3pm (Javits 101)
Saturday: 6pm - 8pm (Cabaret; SAC Auditorium)
Sunday: 1pm - 2pm (SAC Auditorium)
Monday: 9am (Collapse in a bloody heap in my cubicle)

I-CON is taking place at SUNY Stony Brook on Long Island from March 30th to April 1st.  This year’s guests include Paul McGann (The Doctor on FOX’s TV movie), Nana Visitor (DS9), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Frazier Hines (Jamie from classic Doctor Who), Rekha Sharma (new BSG) and more.  Plus there will be performances by Marc Gunn, David Weingart, and Voltaire.  For all the gory details on my personal favorite science fiction convention visit http://www.iconsf.org.

OK, that’s it folks.  Keep an eye out for the next in my series of Ridiculous Raps coming soon now that MarsCon is over.

Check out the latest party video from LA's Cookbook (of LA Symphony) called the "The Party's Still Jumpin.'" The track, reminiscent of a mid nineties west coast hip-hop track, was  featured on a SuperBowl commerical for Suzuki car company. Says Cookbook about the video: "What I really love about the video is the comedic feel, & the fun that you can tell we're all having."
