VP Records Celebrates Wax Poetics Magazine's Reggae Issue Release in New York City and Washington, D.C.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(VP RECORDS, NEW YORK) - VP Records teams up with Wax Poetics Magazine to celebrate the launch of their reggae-oriented edition, Reggae Issue 43, available nationwide on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. The New York City celebration takes place at the Happy Ending Lounge on Thursday, September 23, and the Washington, D.C. soiree happens at Patty Boom Boom on Wednesday, September 29, 2010.
VP Records joins forces with Wax Poetics Magazine for their annual reggae release because it perfectly fits the label's 17 North Parade imprint, which was created to release oldies and specializes in foundation reggae music - the theme of this special reggae issue.
The NYC event will partner up with Deadly Dragon Sound's weekly Downtown Top Ranking party, and will be joined by VP Records' own Clive Chin and DJ Twice as the special guest DJs of Black Moses Sound, for this strictly foundation reggae event. This also kicks off Black Moses Sound's Asian tour, where they will spend three weeks in China and one week in Japan, spreading reggae music to the Far East.
Happy Ending is located at 302 Broome Street in New York, NY and doors open at 10pm. Patty Boom Boom is located at 1359 U Street NW, Washington, D.C., and doors open at 9pm. Both events are free and open to the public.
About 17 North Parade
Created in 2007, 17 North Parade is a VP Records imprint that specializes in oldies, reissues and compilations of foundation reggae music. The 17 North Parade label pays homage to the historic location of Randy's Record Mart in Kingston, Jamaica. Entrepreneurs Vincent & Pat Chin operated a retail store and recording studio at that address from 1958 until 1979 when they relocated to New York and founded VP Records.

MP3: Von Pea f/ Che Grand, Elucid - "Thanks For Your Children"
Von Pea And Friends Do It For The Kids With Latest Single From Pea's Gotta Have It
The Song:
As anticipation grows for the October 12th release of Von Pea's new album, Pea's Gotta Have It, he's enlisted the help of a few friends for the album's newest single "Thanks For Your Children." The new track features guest spots from fellow Lessondary members Che Grand and Elucid and was produced by Philly's own Brizzio, protégé to the legendary producer Buckwild. According to Von, he actually had to hi-jack this track away from Che, as Che's relationship with Brizzio goes way back – he, not Von, usually gets first dibs on Brizio's tracks. All is well that ends well, though, as Von and Che, along with Elucid, all wound up on the track together, absolutely killing it.
With a soulful and catchy hook the track shows off Von's lyrical abilities as he delves into a decidedly different area of subject matter. The emcee strikes a more serious tone than the majority of the lighthearted rhymes about cutting class and other amusing adolescent anecdotes. Instead, the song takes aim at the poor examples being set in his community, sighting drug-addicted mothers and out of control rappers, boldly appointing himself and his crew as a new brand of role models stating, "Along came us, any change is a plus."
Von Pea's solo debut, Pea's Gotta Have It will be available October 12th via Interdependent Media
Long Beach, CA - Raised in the city of Long Beach, CA, a city made famous by Snoop Dogg for it's gang violence and constant street warfare, Samoan rapper and nephew to Boo Yaa Tribe, who first gave America's South Pacific residents the pride to express themselves musically, comes Monsta.
Featured on the upcoming October 5th release, "Savage presents: The Tribal Council" compilation CD (Dawn Raid/SMC/Fontana) Monsta is no stranger to the world of rap music. He was an intregal part of Platinum-selling Yukmouth's Rap-A-Lot recording days.
A former Hollywood bodyguard to the stars, the perils of L.A.'s gang life left their mark on Monsta when he was shot twice while attending an industry event. This near-death experience forced him to re-evaluate his direction and upon turning his life around, Monsta was given his first musical break after rapping for Snoop Dogg's then-producer, L.T. Hutton.
Now a part of the Dawn Raid family, Monsta has several tracks on the upcoming "Savage presents: The Tribal Council" , including "Long Beach Raised Me" and is preparing his own solo debut album, expected in February 2011. The as-yet-untitled album will be released via Dawn Raid's deal through SMC/Fontana and is expected to feature artists like The Jacka, Husalah (Mob Figaz), Hell Rell (Dipset) and Ganxsta Ridd. Production duties will be handled by the likes of FINGAZZ and Twice As Nice.
Monsta now divides his time between L.A. and Australia.

"...Pretty dope... ” – Urb.com
“With 808’s hitting, basslines jumping, Barker’s ill drum pattern sequences, and The Cool Kids more than cool bars, “Jump Down” is definitely a head banger (no pun intended).” –Global Grind

Michael Franti & Spearhead "The Sound of Sunshine" Out Now
Set To Kick Off Release Week With National Tour and Performances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Lopez Tonight
Michael Franti & Spearhead return with their much anticipated album, THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE, this Tuesday, September 21st through Capitol Records/Boo Boo Wax. THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE is Michael Franti & Spearhead’s seventh studio album and the follow-up to 2008’s Top 40 hit All Rebel Rockers. The album’s first single and title track, “The Sound of Sunshine” was #1 at AAA for 8 weeks and is currently in the Top 30 at Hot AC. You can check out the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqgHosrqJ8o .
Franti & Spearhead will also be appearing on both The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Lopez Tonight on the day of the album’s release performing “The Sound of Sunshine”. Check your local listings and be sure to tune in.
In support of the album, Franti kicked off a national tour this past Saturday in Portland, OR and will make stops in many cities throughout the U.S. and Canada including NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles and Toronto. As a part of Franti’s partnership with international shoe charity, Soles4Souls, eight cities on the tour will be a part of a “Barefoot Concert Series” (dates noted below). The series is part of a Franti/Soles4Souls effort to sponsor 100,000 pairs of shoes to raise awareness of the need for footwear both nationally and internationally.
THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE was conceived after Franti was hospitalized for a ruptured appendix in August 2009. “Music is sunshine. It gives us new energy and a stronger sense of purpose. You can’t hold it in your hands, smell it, taste it or even see it, yet somehow just coming together and feeling these little vibrations that tickle our eardrums can somehow lift us all up out of our most difficult moments in life to unimaginable heights,” says Franti.
The band began recording the album in Jamaica with legendary producers Sly and Robbie (Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana, No Doubt) as well as in Franti’s home in Bali and hometown of San Francisco. With the record still not complete, Franti decided to bring a mobile studio on the road with him while he toured with John Mayer this past winter. The album was finished in dressing rooms and hotel rooms along the way with Franti playing songs he had recorded earlier in the day to the audience that evening.
Michael Franti is the creator and lead singer of Michael Franti & Spearhead. For over two decades, the Bay Area born Franti has been bringing our world exceptionally powerful, deeply felt music. Franti first formed the punk band The Beatnigs while studying at the University of San Francisco, and later the far more hip hop-inflected The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. In the mid-Nineties, Franti created Spearhead, and increasingly in recent years, he’s found his own voice musically and his own organic brand of popular success. Franti’s impressive series of recordings have vividly reflected his status as a musical citizen of the world.

Formed in 2002, Custom Made originally consisted of Sinister Six, Bluff, Element, Skandalous Scoobs and Aneek.
In 2004, they released their debut album, “LA State of Mind” to critical acclaim. Custom Made would later become key players in the LA mixtape scene through their renowned “Street Cinema” series. 2006 saw the group inking with indie label Babygrande Records and the release of their “Sidewalk Mindtalk” compilation.
Soon after the release of Sidewalk Mindtalk, Aneek would leave the group due to personal issues and Six found himself incarcerated for two years. This left Custom Made as a trio of Bluff, Element and Scoobs. After being bestowed Rawkus Next 50 honors by seminal hip-hop brand Rawkus in 2007 the trio returned with their sophomore LP, Original Dynasty on Babygrande in 2008.
2009 saw Custom Made continue the Street Cinema series with the release of “The Lost Weekend” mixtape. After leaving Babygrande in 2009; Custom Made recorded Hi-Def. This year Custom Made linked up with NY label Coalmine Records to drop Hi-Def as a digital release on November 9th. Hi-Def features production from THX, Abstrakt Soundz, Jayem, Animoss (Arch Druids), Terminall and guests Mac Lucci (Hustle Boyz/DPG), Woozy (Brothaz Bent) and the rest of the Custom Made collective.
After a year hiatus Custom Made links up with Coalmine Records to showcase their latest release “Hi-Def” to show what hip-hop has been missing.

Here's the record a LOT of people have been waiting on - the Joell Ortiz collaboration! This is one of my favorite songs on the album (tho I have a lot). I've been a fan of Joell for years and was really excited that we had the opportunity to work with him. So please enjoy Culture VI artist John Regan's second single off of Sorry I'm Late - Yesterday!!
Culture VI Records presents John Regan: Sorry I'm Late
September 20th, 2010: 24 year-old Baltimore artist John Regan has collaborated with several of hip-hop and R&B's most respected talents for his debut solo album, "Sorry I'm Late", which will be released October 12th, 2010 on Culture VI Records.
The album includes features by Marsha Ambrosius, Joell Ortiz, Naledge of Kidz in the Hall, Skyzoo, Sha Stimuli, Ill Bill and PackFM. While multi-platinum producer Needlz provides the soundscape for three stellar tracks, 88-Keys and Nottz team up - for the first time - to provide the production for "Nobody's Somebody". Keys supplies the samples and drums, with Nottz contributing one of his signature bass lines - while also reciting a riveting verse.
Unheralded, yet well accredited, producer YZ provides the canvas for a majority of the collaborations on "Sorry I'm Late". Under the tutelage of veteran producer Chucky Thompson, YZ began his career working alongside Rich Harrison and Young Guru. He has since spent his years recording and producing for such artists as Mary J. Blige, Lil Wayne, Wyclef Jean, and Patti Labelle. Setting the tone for the album with hard, crisp drums, emotional instrumentation, and an attention to detach l rarely found on independent releases, YZ is hoping to use this project as a means to introduce himself to people outside of the industry who might not otherwise be familiar with his work.
John's lyrics can best be described as authentic. There are no tales of drug kingpins or any false gangsta-isms in his music. Instead, his songs vividly describe pain, loss and struggle, yet with a hint of hopefulness. John is both a rookie and a veteran of the industry. Having been signed to Culture VI Records for the past nine years, John has worked intimately with the creation and marketing of the label's past four releases, learning the importance of relationship building, while feverishly developing his social media skills - making it difficult to remember that this is only his first album. The early leaks have received an overwhelming response, having already been featured on hundreds of blogs and websites, including such influential sites as 2dopeboyz, HipHopDX and DJBooth.
With over a half-million views of Culture VI interviews last year, "Sorry I'm Late" is poised to capitalize on the label's strong brand recognition. Culture VI has also partnered with Ariel Publicity in an effort to maximize all possible marketing opportunities.
