Block Entertainment Signs New Artists & Readies Upcoming Projects

Block Entertainment, one of the fastest growing independent record labels in Atlanta (Sony/RCA), continues to make its mark in the industry with the recent signing of three new artists: Jamaican beauty Kris Kelli, 18-year-old Chip of the Rebel Gang, and hood star 48 Slim. In addition to adding to his roster of talent, CEO Russell “Block” Spencer just inked a deal with Chevrolet as one of its only faces of urban marketing, and announced he will be the executive producer of a new film titled “Down By Law” starring Ice Cube, to be released in 2013.

Touting Kris Kelli as the next pop sensation, Block says he is “building a bridge to blend her music and culture with the States. I wanted to do something different and keep it fresh with her music. I think she is a superstar.” Kris Kelli will release her new EP on Feb. 14, 2013 featuring the catchy singles “Me and You” with Gorilla Zoe, “Action” and “Kingston” with MIA. Staying true to the company’s new movement of “rebuilding Hip-Hop block by block,” Block introduces budding rap artist Chip (of rap group Rebel Gang) with the upcoming release of his solo mixtape. The Atlanta-native recently released the first song from his project titled “We Own the Year,” featuring Gorilla Zoe. “I signed him because I liked his style, his cockiness but most of all because he believed in himself. His style is unorthodox, unlike what anyone else is doing right now,” notes Block. Hood rap star and Atlanta-native 48 Slim rounds out the new roster. Reminiscent of 50 Cent when he first exploded onto the scene, 48 Slim represents the streets. He is currently in the studio working on new music and plans to release a new song titled “Dumb” as a follow up to his first release “Fuck Em.”

As if the talent on Block’s artist roster isn’t enough, the entertainment powerhouse will begin shooting the new movie “Down By Law” starring Ice Cube in the summer of 2013. The film will be executively produced by Block, produced by Tony Draper, and directed by Ice Cube. In addition to the film, Block is merging into Hollywood with two new reality shows: 1) “The Playa’z Club,” which will show a behind the scenes look at how artists are catching their big breaks by performing at strip clubs and connecting with DJ’s; and 2) a show titled “The Daredevils,” featuring the life of “ruff riding” stunts on 4-wheelers and dirt bikes by K.K. and Mike C.

Block brings years of experience and a proven track record to the table as the head of Block Entertainment. The Atlanta-native jumped into the entertainment industry under the mentorship of Tupac Shakur and eventually went on to work at 8BALL and MJG and Suave House with Jazze Pha. He honed his craft of developing music artists as the Head A&R at Noontime Productions, working with artists the likes of Mary J Blige and Jay-Z. Block is responsible for the getting Rick Ross, Jody Breeze, Ciara, Young Jeezy, Boyz n da Hood, Yung Joc, Gorilla Zoe signed to their respective major record label deals.

Audio: Motel Eola - Kids Looking For Gold

This instrumental project is about youthfulness, inspiration & the pursuit of happiness versus harsh reality. Illustrated through sweet samples, heavy drum breaks & cool relevant skits. "Kids Looking For Gold" is my metaphor for our generation of individuals. We are all in search of our own "Gold" whether it be physical material possessions, the notion of success, or the achievement of our wildest dreams. Along this Journey for our "Gold" we may forget who we once were, conform to the norm, submit to defeat or accept "reality". As "Kids" we were forever optimistic, imaginative & experimental. The more we grow up the more we set aside our dreams as if the countdown of our life on earth is ever decreasing, leaving not enough time for us to do what we yearn for. No, we are dream chasers, creators and forever young at heart. We are "Kids Looking For Gold".

The video, directed by Dan Gotti, sees the camera catch Copywrite and Tage spending time with their girls. "'Somewhere' is about taking that special lady somewhere," says Copywrite, and Tage agrees, taking the concept a step further. "It's about going somewhere and enjoying it," says Tage, "whether it's physically going somewhere, or mentally."

Late last month, Baltimore-Brooklyn duo Constant Deviants released a free album stream for their forthcoming LP, Diamond. The project, which will receive a retail release in late-January, is easily some of Constant Deviants' most cohesive, accomplished work to date, with rapper M.I. and producer DJ Cutt, hitting full groove together in a way that can only be accomplished after years of back-and-forth collaboration. One particular standout from the album is lead single "Gangster Boogie," and now, Constant Deviants are releasing the official music video for the song.
