MP3: DJ Smallz f/ Da Backwudz, Lil Scrappy - "Freestyle (Unreleased)"
Courtesy DJ Smallz.
Released from DJ Smallz' vault, this was recorded circa 2005 when Lil Scrappy was screaming G-Unit and Da Backwudz were a group signed to Dallas Austin. Fast foward to 2011, Lil Scrappy recently left Ludacris' DTP imprint and Aleon Craft, 1 half of Da Backwudz, is working on his solo career.
You may have heard Vancouver's Kutcorners. Maybe not by name but certainly by sound. He's been supplying bass lines and remixes for the likes of U-Tern, DJ Eleven, DJ Ayres, The Kickdrums, and Keys N Krates for the last few years as well as touring with Canada's The Freshest DJ crew. Originally from New Zealand, he's half man, half amazin', half kiwi and half Canadian.
"Diamond," his first solo release, is an absolutely irresistible track that explores the foundations of 80's New Wave and Boogie and features the vocals of Curtis Santiago. Kutcorners channels the sounds of Luther Vandross, Nu Shooz, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, all the while adding a crisp production twist that'll keep dance floors bumping.
"Diamond" is being released digitally on DJ Eleven's 11-Inch Records label and is also available on 7" vinyl for all those who need it in their record collection.
Oso Slick: hesh'n gone hip hop, a MC that raps about skateboarding. This blue collar hip hop artist is always pushing life to the limit. He's an adrenaline junky with soul and flow. Original lyrics over multiple styles of beats: acoustic, rocker, reggae, Spanish, club, and digital. His style and roots come from seven years of experience in a punk band. He has performed at small to medium size venues all over California. Bringing in the crowds of hip hopsters, punk rockers, rastas, and down to earth people, allowing the crowd to let loose and have a great time. His ultimate goal is to stop the hate, spread the love, and to connect with everyone under the sun.
A lot of people have said that he sounds a lot like Andre 3000, which he takes as a compliment. He considers himself to be a moderate skateboarder, but says skateboarding is not about rating yourself. It's about the ciphering of energy between you and your friends. It's like when someone lands a trick you get all excited, bang your board, make some noise and make them feel good about themselves or vice versa. Oso feels the same way about music. The more pumped up the crowd is, the more amped up he is, which only betters the experience for everybody. So to all of you that have not heard Oso Slick, you are guaranteed to like and enjoy at least one of his songs. Oso is ready to take his music to the next level and perform at larger venues. He will be featured in the August issue of Thrasher Magazine. You can check him out at ososlick.com, on Itunes and rhapsody.
Some extra info. Oso Slick made all his own beats, except Warriors. He also books all his shows, and does most of the foot work, making and passing out flyers, and networking on Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. Slick has been a stage hand and ground rigger for the past 5 years and knows what all goes in to make a show happen.

2011 marks the return of the Compilation like you have never experienced it before, with the birth of The Academy, a bi-coastal merging of the minds that provides an undeniable unity long since forgotten amidst the landscape of popularized feuds, beefs, and unfounded media hypes.
