From Brosseau PR:

Louisville-based hip hop group Villebillies have released their third (and long-awaited) full-length studio album, APPETITE FOR DYSFUNCTION (Island Earth Music). The 16-track album includes the single, “Talk To Me” which can be heard on terrestrial, satellite and Internet radio shows across the country.

APPETITE FOR DYSFUNCTION, while exuding the cross-genre sound the group has been known for since its 2006 self-titled debut, is lyrically progressive, reflecting the years following their last studio release (2008’s FROM THE BELLY OF THE BEAST). The band has emerged unscathed with a collection of new material that unites the nostalgia of the “early times” with the innovation that continues to keep Villebillies difficult to define.

The moody, atmospheric opening piece, “Midnight” makes it clear that dense, impeccable harmonies and a slight twang do not mean a lighthearted listen. It’s only setting up for the next track, “Pure to the Grain” which, supported by an upfront rhythm section, melodic hook, and rock sensibility, reminds that Villebillies’ four frontmen are also lyric spitters of formidable force. The blues-groove of “Rocket Queen” further demonstrates the versatility and virtuosity of this collective, which regularly includes anything from hip hop style samples to hillbilly banjo licks to classical strings arrangements. But the standout is the dark surprise of “Talk To Me,” a track that is so musically attractive and accessible that it only barely disguises the point of view of a serial killer.

Villebillies is a true band, having played hundreds of shows across the United States, sharing the stage with independent and major acts, from Hed PE to Hank Junior to Method Man. Villebillies’ originality and authenticity has turned the heads of even the most skeptical audiences, earning the band a large and diverse fan base.

“…filled with subtly clever production flourishes…giant hooks, the band’s collective (and essential) sense of humor, and guitars…the Villebillies write songs, not chord changes, and they sing instead of shout.”

“A unique blend of hip-hop and rock like you have never heard.

It's like Outkast meets Kid Rock.”

Villebillies are Demi Demaree, Dylan O’ Daniel, Derek “Child” Monyhan and Dustin “Tuck” Tucker on vocals. Tim Bernauer drums, Ron Ping bass guitar, Justin Reid electric guitar, William “BJ” Young keys/ production and Adam Goff on acoustic guitar. APPETITE FOR DSYFUNCTION was self-produced and mastered by Joel Hopper (except “O’Death”).

APPETITE FOR DSYFUNCTION is available online at iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, 7digital, Spotify and at the band’s website.

From DM360:

Free Album: The Nezitiq Mute & DJ Concept - "This Glorious Nightmare"

Somewhere between a twisted nightmare and harsh reality, The Nezitiq Mute and DJ Concept take your brain to the outskirts of Hip-Hop. Influenced by elements of both Rock and Hip-Hop, The Mute prove that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, as they concoct a glorious nightmare over the dark and sometimes beautiful soundscape, produced entirely by Concept. All nightmares start somewhere and this one starts with a chemically induced, governmental experiment. Prepare.

Rap & Religion: Understanding The Gangstas God by Dr. Ebony Utley

From Brett & Top Notch:

Rap & Religion: Understanding The Gangstas God by Dr. Ebony Utley

Amazon - Rap and Religion: Understanding the Gangsta's God

Rap and Religion: Understanding the Gangsta’s God (Available from Praeger, June 30, 2012) tackles a sensitive and controversial topic: the juxtaposition—and seeming hypocrisy—of references to God within rap music. Hip hop culture and rap music in particular have been condemned for inciting violence, promoting misogyny, and perpetuating racial stereotypes. However, Dr. Ebony A. Utley argues that religion has always been an integral part of the urban environments that birthed rap music and she shows exactly how a God-sanctioned gangsta identity can be empowering. Dr. Utley sources lyrics, videos, award acceptance speeches, magazine and website content, liner notes, and survey data to provide an enlightening, representative account of how and why rappers talk about God.

"Rap and Religion is elegant, compelling, and desperately needed. Utley’s bracing exploration of the godly and divine in rap music illuminates new, powerful, and poignant intersections between the politics of religion, race, gender, and commerce. A remarkable scholarly achievement, and a gift to hip hop fans everywhere."
- Michael P. Jeffries, Author of Thug Life
"A close reading of mainstream hip hop lyrics and artists of the last three decades Rap and Religion uncovers the place where God, spirituality, and Christianity meet. Hip hop aficionados have long proclaimed that hip hop is a culture. If this is true, what is its spiritual philosophy? Ebony Utley offers a persuasive answer."
- Bakari Kitwana, Author of The Hip-Hop Generation
"The intellectual range with which Utley explores the spiritual contours of rap and hip hop are perhaps only matched by the vocalic range of the lyricism she examines. In this fascinating, thought-provoking, experience-driven, and often encyclopedic journey through hip hop's multifaceted legacies, Utley makes a compelling case about rap and hip hop's spiritual relevance, leaving us both breathless and reenergized."
- Ronald L. Jackson II, Author of Scripting the Black Masculine Body
