A little while back, two of the Bay Area's finest, Shady Nate and DJ Fresh, announced the forthcoming release of Still Based On A True Story. The new album, jointly released today between DJ Fresh's Fresh In The Flesh and Nate's Shady Nation labels, is a follow-up to the pair's Based On A True Story album released back in 2007, a project that remains one of the most successful albums for both artists. Still Based On A True Story follows well in the footsteps of its predecessor, with Nate's quick-fire, street-wise rhymes playing off Fresh's dynamic, synth- and 808-driven production.
Today, to celebrate the new album, Shady Nate and DJ Fresh are releasing a brand new single, "Tell Me I Don't Go," a track that features fellow Bay rapper J. Stalin, along with recent Bay Area Freshmen class inductee Lil' Rue. "Tell Me I Don't Go" picks up well where previous singles and videos, including "Real Ni**a Recipe" and "Gimmie Da Loot," left off, built around boastful shit talk and an equally sinister hook, with Nate rapping, "Running ni**ga's hoes/ Selling ni**ga's O's/ Changing cars like clothes, ni**a, tell me I don't go."
Shady Nate is no stranger to struggle and adversity. Born and raised in West Oakland's Acorn housing projects, Shady Nate learned from a young age to hustle and grind to get anywhere. His rapping career began at the age of five when he started writing his thoughts and daily experiences in a journal. These entries gradually developed into the lyrics that he spits today. In 2004 Shady Nate launched Livewire Records and subsequently recorded and released a full-length mixtape with Nas' tour DJ, Oakland native DJ Fresh. The buzz only got bigger when Nate released The Bofessional, which is regarded as his best mixtape to date. Riding high on his growing popularity, Shady Nate released The Gasman Unleashed in June 2009, and the album was quickly dubbed a west coast classic. His upcoming album, Still Based On A True Story, will be available July 19th via Fresh In The Flesh/Shady Nation.
