Upon hearing a remix of Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" by Canadian DJ and producer Ryan Hemsworth, San Francisco based rapper A-1 knew the track was perfectly suited to his unexpectedly somber reminiscing on real life summertime experiences. With a production style that he describes as piling "a whole bunch of aggressiveness and energy on top" of an already gloomy record, the Hemsworth remix allowed A-1 to explore themes of unrest, crime and violence among young people in the city that are often amplified by the brutal heat, long days and ample free time that summer provides.

PR: @FakeFour to Release Botzy's @BuckFotzy on 7/9

PR: Fake Four to Release Botzy's Buck Fotzy on 7/9

Botzy is the consummate Minneapolis rap hustler, recognizing that work ethic extends into every facet of his musical journey. You'll see it on stage and off, the hungry approach to both his craft and his movement, and the passion behind his art from all sides culminates in an impressive final product. While cutting teeth since 2009 rapping in the genre-bending live band Culture Cry Wolf, Botzy's been able to fine tune his voice and energy enough to handle both solo and group creative efforts.

When he attacks tracks on his own - as he has on 2010's Deaf to the Static, various mixtapes, and his upcoming release Buck Fotzy - the songs bare his individual signature, spinning tales of soured relationships and personal struggle with a grin and a sense of humor. Having always held the spark to write and inspire others, his initial work with GAHEDiNDIE ( now known as “Moodie Black” ) - and by extension, P.O.S., Carnage, and other Minneapolis heavyweights - shaped his skill with all facets of rap creation. Bouncing around different cities until finally landing in Minneapolis in 2008, whose scene fit his rhythm and aesthetic impeccably, Botzy has been putting in work as a show curator in addition to his own performances. The successful Best Love Is Free showcase and mix CD release is entering its fifth year of increasing turn-outs, and the support Botzy lends other artists within the local community is impressive. As a solid figure already in the Minneapolis rap scene, Botzy is ready with the release of Buck Fotzy to take his music to the next level.

ABOUT BUCK FOTZY:

"With Buck Fotzy, I had no expectations. I completely took everything I had learned, patterns, the motions of how I created things, and scratched it all," says Botzy of his process for his upcoming solo venture. He's accumulated a lot of knowledge about the craft of rap in his years, evidenced by his work with live band Culture Cry Wolf and his previous solo efforts Deaf to the Static and My Friends and I, but his approach on Buck Fotzy is a different beast. While the core sound remains, leaning towards upbeat jazz-sampled boom-bap and heart-on-the-sleeve lyricism, there's an emphasis on energy and boisterous flows.

Botzy flips negatives into party tracks, instilling a live feel into thematics that strike differently depending on the listeners context. "Learning from Culture Cry Wolf, I was like, I'm gonna get my live set up. A lot of Buck Fotzy I made because my live set in comparison to Culture Cry was depressing as all fuck," says Botzy. The songs never shy from dark territory, but there's a persistent sense of assuredness throughout. With vibrant production from Kudo, Ackronem, and Soulcrate's DJ Absolute, manages a strong singular sound while weaving between topics and pulses. Interspersed are some strong guest spots from other Minneapolis names to know, like The Chalice's Lizzo and Sophia Eris, Audio Perm's Chantz Erolin, and Illuminous 3's Freez. It's a cohesive album with range: The somber tone of "Need A Moment" is contrasted by the shit-talking of "Burger Jones"; the blunt confrontations in "You Got It?" are approached with smooth hooks in "Thrill Is Gone".

"Everything I recorded I had written and memorized for at least a month before we went in the studio. I knew exactly how I wanted to deliver it. It's a new process," says Botzy, speaking on reshaping his approach. "I don't think I had a concept, the project touches on a lot of different things writing-wise. From doing this project I learned this is how I want my writing style and my voice". Botzy attributes much of his style and approach to his time spent in Minneapolis, where the hub of creativity and steady movement of forward momentum find him right at home. Buck Fotzy is a record that draws from the best of the Minneapolis rap scene's traditions, expanding and reshaping the emotional honesty and true-school aesthetic into an individual expression that is wholly Botzy.
