Madball's Freddy Cricien Names His Top 5 NYHC Albums
Madball frontman Freddy Cricien recently shared his top five favorite New York Hardcore albums for MetalInsider.net. In this exclusive count-down, Cricien not only lists his five favorite records and tracks (including releases from Sick Of It All, Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front and others), but also recalls each album’s significance to the legendary NYHC scene. Find out which NYHC albums made Freddy’s list via the link below:
If anyone can evoke the spirit of NYHC, it would be Freddy Cricien. By the time he turned 7 years old, Freddy was already performing onstage with his brother Roger Miret (vocalist for Agnostic Front) in front of a packed, sweaty crowd of tatted L.E.S. punks. At the age of 12, Cricien was fronting his own group Madball and had recorded his debut album “Ball Of Destruction” with legendary producer Don Fury, which dropped in 1989.
Freddy has continued to hold the spirit he held when first forming Madball with their new EP “Rebellion,” which in addition to including four new songs also features re-recorded versions of two tracks from Ball Of Destruction “Get Out” and “It’s My Life.” Speaking on the re-recorded songs, Cricien says “We re-did those two tracks because out of the old batch, we've been playing those two the longest. They are part of our set till this day. I think our fans really identify with those.”
Rebellion was released digitally last month via Freddy’s own The Black N Blue Label, with a vinyl pressing due out shortly. Madball will be performing numerous European festivals this Summer, with more dates to come. Meanwhile, Freddy (under his emcee alias Freddy Madball) recently teamed up with DJ Stress to release a new hip hop mixtape titled “The Black n Blueprint.” Free download link below.

Album: D Strong & Dave Sparkz - "UNFOLD" #BOOMBAP #HIPHOP
Unfold is a Combo of Gritty story telling, spiritual enlightment, aggressive emceeing, and nostalgic hip hop music. Los Angeles Emcee D Strong considers this some of his best work to date and after the first listen you might also agree.
Dave Sparkz is a young producer from Switzerland whose production style lends big drums and a variety of ILL sounds that are seamlessly put together and show and prove quality. D Strong says of the producer: "He is my favorite producer right now out of anyone...Sparkz has a huge collection of beats." Dave Sparkz also released an instrumental lp on Digi Crates Records entitled "Ivory Lounge".
"D Strong & Dave Sparkz" this is definitely a combo you want to be checking for especially if you are looking for some Top Quality BOOM Bap! Keep a close watch for these two both together and separate.
Recently my group Native Sun released our latest Music Video “Gallery Of Dreams” which was filmed in Belgium by Globalfaction. The song was Produced by Thief & Steele and is the second single released from our New album "Indigenous Soundwaves" now available on iTunes and all good digital stores.
Just a few days after the release of his highly anticipated 4th album, Color Theory, Kero One drops the MV for Shortcuts, a self-produced single featuring Maryland native, Sam Ock.
Directed by Ross Ching, the video tells the story of 2 people (Ock and Yuri Tag, of Kaba Modern) whose lives are changed as an antagonist, played by Kero One, eventually uses his street art in a very mysterious way.
As an ex- graffiti artist, it seems fitting that Kero One would pay homage to his early street art days with throw back references from the 80's hiphop classic Beatstreet as well as legendary NY street artist Keith Haring. Watch to see how Kero One ultimately has a change of heart and alters the lives of Sam and Yuri.
