UK-based BBE Records is pleased to announce the release of The Best of Perception & Today Records, a compilation featuring the best tracks of the history making labels Perception Records and sub-label Today Records. And who better than music historian and world-class Brooklyn deejay/producer, DJ Spinna, along with the BBE Soundsystem, to be at the helm of such an undertaking?

Founded in the 60s and run through the 70s, New York-based Perception Records and Today Records became legendary for releasing much of the black music of that era. Hard to pin down in terms of genre, they started with artists that played everything from jazz, funk and disco to poetry, pop and pretty much everything in between, but what they were known for is providing a breeding ground that gave exposure to many artists we all know and love such as The Fatback Band and Joe Thomas. During their time they also put out many records by favorites like Dizzy Gillespie and Astrud Gilberto. For example Black Ivory “You and I” was sampled by Q Tip in “Gettin' Up” and “I Keep Asking You Questions” by Raekwon feat. Ghostface Killah in “Criminology”, Tyrone Washington - “Submission” was sampled by  Kenny Dope in “Get on Down”, Dizzy Gillespie - Matrix was sampled by The Beatnuts feat. V.I.C. in “World's Famous”, etc.

Packaged with extensive sleeve notes written by renowned DJ and compiler Dean Rudland, the record will be accompanied by two 7″ vinyl releases.

Amazingly, the labels only ran for five years until they closed their doors in 1974. But, with such a wealth of great music put out during that time, this compilation is the perfect way to re-open them. For the music aficionado or the hip-hop head, The Best of Perception & Today Records is tribute to two labels who made music history in the 70s.
