The Hip-Hop Shop #178 - Lung Butter

It's time for another new edition of The Hip-Hop Shop. Episode #178 is called Lung Butter for two reasons - chief of which is that host Steve 'Flash' Juon is keeping his mouth shut after a weekend of smoky dives and clubs. The emcees on this show know that feeling well though - veterans of the rap industry like Backbone, Soul Khan, yU and James John! Please send your feedback to dj.flash@rapreviews.com or @RapReviews on this episode! Thanks for listening and remember to share the show with a friend and tell them to check it out every Tuesday on RapReviews.com! The Adam B Experience #59 - That 2:30 AM Feeling

Adam: "Do you have that 2:30 feeling? Well, hopefully it's a 2:30AM feeling and you're amped to keep the party going because that's exactly what this edition of my ABX podcast is going to do. I guess, technically, if you were feeling sluggish it would be quite the effective pick me up, as well, so no matter how you're feeling the PLAY button is the answer to your prayers. (I'm assuming you were praying for some great hip-hop. If you weren't, what are you doing here?)

This month's edition of The Adam B Experience features 14 songs, including a few ABX artist debuts, with everything adding up to nearly an hour of music. I've also thrown in some of my own personal brand of lunacy for good measure. Follow me on Twitter at @AdamsWorldBlog or hit me up with feedback at AdamB@RapReviews.com." The Adam B Experience is 100% PODSAFE and TOTALLY FREE so tell your friends to download ABX right here at RapReviews.com!

Adam's World Weekly 6/18 - Who The Heck Is Adam B?

Welcome to the new week everyone. On Friday night I was perusing the magazine racks of my local Barnes & Noble when I came across my twelfth national magazine cover story. It's always fun to see my work on a newsstand, but I honestly didn't know this issue of Substream was out yet, so my reaction must have been doubly entertaining to anyone who saw me pick it up. I have more on that issue in this week's update. I also, after nine years of having no "About" section of Adam's World, finally wrote an "About Me" blog post. Long overdue? Maybe, but I sure have a heck of a lot more to talk about than I did way back then. In addition to that brand spankin new page, I have a fantastic interview with Nova Rockafeller. I was extremely excited about her the first time I saw her video for "Call Me (BATMAN)" and now I'm one of the first people to interview her! I also have a great interview with NYC duo Baby Cave, a brand new Pop Shots, and a dope Vid Pick from CT's own Chase Davis.

If you dig any of these features please feel free to forward this email to a friend. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, and enjoy!

My 12th National Magazine Cover Story Is...

Who The Heck Is Adam B?

Hi, I’m Adam Bernard, but you can call me Adam B (I’m the smiley guy on the left). I started Adam’s World in August of 2003, so I figured nearly nine years later is the perfect time to put together an “About Me” section for the site.

Nova Rockafeller Is About To Blow Your Mind

Possessing the lyrical prowess of Charli Baltimore, and the visual creativity of Kreayshawn, Nova Rockafeller is something special.

Born in Canada, raised in Negril, Jamaica, and having bounced around America, including stops in New York and LA, Nova Rockafeller, who is of Ukrainian, English and French descent, realizes she’ll initially be lumped in the “white girl rapper” category, but according to her that’s OK, “as long as they say ‘rapper.’”

Nova Rockafeller, first and foremost, is about her skills, which is something some may not initially realize when they take a look at her unique fashion sense that includes custom made jewelry from her Toys On Chains line, and duct tape modified thrift store t-shirts that she plans to market as a modified street wear line “so girls of all body types can modify them.” She is imaginative, she is colorful, and she wants to rap circles around her competition.

Right now Nova Rockafeller’s video for her single “Call Me (BATMAN)” is blowing up on YouTube, and the major labels are starting to come calling. I caught up with her while she was taking a break from filming her next video, and she told me about her past, the meaning behind some of her lyrics, and why she decided to create a t-shirt that says “I Fucked Her” over a picture of herself. Nova Rockafeller also discussed the very strange tradition she has after meetings with record labels, and the kind of date she desperately wants to be asked out on (hint: it involves a corsage).

Pop Shots - Fine Whine

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from John Mayer being upset at Taylor Swift, to Amanda Bynes begging for some presidential intervention, to Erykah Badu complaining about the video for her collaboration with the Flaming Lips, and since it’s Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

PR: Y-Love Proud to Perform at Pride Parade

Crossover hip-hop artist Yitz “Y-Love” Jordan is returning to New York in a big way with his first live performance since coming out of the closet on Sunday June 24 at the 2012 NYC LGBT Pride Parade. He will perform on the float of Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, the "world's largest LGBT synagogue."

"It means so much to me to be able to perform at NYC Pride, the Pride festival in the birthplace of the gay pride movement," Y-Love wrote in a recent Q&A. At the parade he will be performing his coming out track, "Focus On The Flair," as well as debuting new, unreleased tracks from the album of the same name. Y-Love will also be throwing a surprise coming out afterparty in the East Village featuring some of the hottest names in the LGBT world (details forthcoming).

Long acclaimed as the first black Jewish MC, Y-Love revealed he was gay to OUT Magazine last month, and instantly was the #1 most popular piece on OUT,generating buzz around the world. CNN Entertainment, Russell Simmons' Global Grind, The Advocate, The Times of Israel, and The Jerusalem Post all featured Y-Love's story of triumph over homophobia - and of the unexpected acceptance and love he received from the Orthodox community.

Focus On The Flair is a drastic departure from Y-Love's former releases. “My upcoming album is the first album where I feel like my music reflects an inner happiness and joy instead of primarily an inner conflict," Y-Love says. "And that is a reflection of what it means to come out and be true to oneself – the joy, the relief and the hope. I hope that is what people will see and focus on.”

Focus On The Flair has two more singles on the way: "Fashion Show" and "Famous." Catwalk-ready electro hip hop track "Fashion Show" features Yula Beeri singing in a style that sounds like a mash of Madonna and Santigold. On "Famous," Los Angeles-based artists Brody and Milli810 join Y-Love over an electronic dance track produced by Vibe & LFO. The album is due later this fall, and is the perfect record to re-introduce Y-Love as the first gay rapper to come out of the closet mid-career.

One half of the producer/emcee tandem Divine Minds, Cleveland wordsmith James John's (aka Black J) unique abilities and approach to emceeing have gained him a strong reputation amongst fans and industry people, alike. It's his devotion to creating genuine music listeners can relate to that keeps him hungry yet grounded and it's easy to see that every bar he crafts is carefully done so.
