8Ball Set to Release New Studio Album, "Life's Quest," July 17th
New York – 8Ball (of 8ball & MJG fame) is set to release his new studio album, Life’s Quest, on July 17, 2012 through eOne Music/Push Management LLC. The new disc features Big KRIT, Angie Stone, Jr. Reid, Slim (of 112) and 2 Chainz. Life’s Quest features southern beatmasters Drumma Boy and Big KRIT, who have crafted heavy basslines and melodic hooks to illustrate 8Ball’s colorful verse. Life’s Quest is 8Ball's first solo album since 1998’s double album Lost on Suave House.
The first single, "Good Girl, Bad Girl," is beging serviced to radio now.
At the forefront of the southern rap movement, the duo of 8Ball & MJG broke out of Memphis with their debut album Comin’ Out Hard. Subsequent albums from 8Ball and MJG, including On The Outside Looking In (1994) and On Top Of The World (1995), sold well and were met with critical praise, thus further solidifying the group as an emerging act in the Southwestern hip hop scene, alongside UGK, The Geto Boys and Three 6 Mafia.
8Ball & MJG made news in 2003 when they signed with Diddy’s label Bad Boy Records at a time when the Southern rap scene was exploding. The subsequent album, Living Legends, was the group’s best seller to date, and debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. The group most recently released Ten Toes Down on T.I.’s Grand Hustle label, in conjunction with eOne. All in all, the duo released 11 albums together.
8Ball’s recent mixtape, Premro, hosted by Drumma Boy, proved to the world once again why 8Ball is your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper. The 15 track mixtape was full of 8Ball’s vivid story lines and included features by Bun B, Killer Mike, 2 Chainz, MJG, Waka Flocka, Yung Joc, Yelawolf & more.
The stunning visual shot by Pots N Pans Films pairs harsh images to Burgundy's graphic biography flow over the eerie piano of Birdy's Shelter. Combined with haunting atmospherics, the track is a voulnerable first offering from the Brooklyn rapper. The impressive song features no drums and combines spoken word, a variety of rhyme schemes and a pyramid of tangents that launch from the rapper's childhood to his young adult life; and tie religion, race identiy issues, discrimination and the questioning of false idols all in one three minute burst of emotion. The result: raw hip hop too real for the radio.
==================================================================== Before the world ever heard the name ELZHI the young artist was sitting in the back of classrooms thinking of rhymes, spitting verses while his friend banged out beats on desks. He sharpened every blade in his arsenal, developing his style to measure up against the competition in Maurice Malone's Hip Hop Shop, the legendary proving ground for Detroit artists that produced some of the greatest emcees in the world.
ELZHI spent years paying dues, writing songs, entering battles, and recording demos until he finally made his international debut on "Come and Get It," a standout track from J-Dilla's ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’. The acclaimed song drew massive attention to the mysterious artist and made his unfinished EP, Out of Focus, a highly sought after recording.
ELZHI fuelled this buzz by joining Slum Village in 2001 elevating the crew's reputation, and allowing him to reach new levels of lyricism. He recorded multiple albums with his former group, selling hundreds of thousands of records, and touring the world.
In 2004, ELZHI released ‘Witness My Growth’, a two disc mixtape featuring many of his lost or unfinished solo songs, which has come to be considered an underground classic. Upon his returning form his first solo tour he promptly released the ‘The Preface’, his solo debut on Fat Beats Records. The album helped to solidify his reputation as one of the most inventive lyricists in the world, earning acclaim from legendary artists and fans alike. In 2009, responding to the demands of his passionate fan base, ELZHI released The ‘Leftovers’ mixtape, a collection of rare tracks and unreleased exclusives featuring the hit single "Deep."
In 2010, no longer content with being "your favourite rapper's favourite rapper," ELZHI got down to business. Moving past the relationship with his former group, ELZHI has reinvented himself as a solo artist and reignited his early buzz. This year, he released ‘ElMatic’, a homage to Nas's classic debut, ‘ILLmatic’. A labor of love that set the internet alight, the project finds the Detroit emcee creating new songs out of Nas's originals while rapping over the Will Sessions Band's interpretation of the original beats.
