TUPAC’S “DEAR MAMA” SELECTED FOR INCLUSION IN LIBRARY OF CONGRESS’ NATIONAL RECORDING REGISTRY
Classic 1995 track is one of 25 recordings deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by Library of Congress this year
Tupac Shakur’s “Dear Mama,” a classic track from his 1995 album Me Against The World, has been selected for inclusion and preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. “Dear Mama” is one of 25 recordings chosen by the Library as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” among others such as Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning,” Patti Smith’s Horses, the original 1959 cast recording of Gypsy, and battle sounds from World War II.
Recorded shortly before a stint in prison, “Dear Mama” is Tupac’s heartfelt tribute to his mother Afeni, who raised him as a single parent through her own poverty and drug addictions. The rapper notes her dignity through these hardships, rapping “Even as a crack fiend, mama/You always was a black queen, mama.” A hit single upon its release, the song is widely considered to be among Tupac’s best songs, and one of the greatest rap tracks of all time. The Library of Congress noted with their announcement that the song is a “moving and eloquent homage to both his own mother and all mothers struggling to maintain a family in the face of addiction, poverty and societal indifference.”
“I’m incredibly touched,” says Afeni Shakur, the late rapper’s mother and subject of “Dear Mama.” “It could have been any song, but I’m honored they chose ‘Dear Mama’ in particular. It is a song that spoke not just to me, but every mother that has been in that situation, and there have been millions of us. Tupac recognized our struggle, and he is still our hero.”
This latest distinction is only one of many posthumous honors to Tupac’s career. Last December, his song “Changes” was selected as one of The Vatican’s “12 Favorite Songs.” In September 2009, it was announced that the artist’s private writings would be added to Atlanta University Center’s Robert Woodruff Library – an institution that also houses Martin Luther King’s papers – to be made available for scholarly research. Clearly, the work of this remarkable and visionary rapper remains as relevant to today’s world as ever.
The Tupac Shakur Foundation is home to The Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts, just outside of Atlanta in Stone Mountain, Ga. The Center is dedicated to providing youth and the community with educational programs in the arts. It is a fact that early arts education improves school grades, as well as offers invaluable life lessons while building self esteem and confidence. MP3: Black Sheep - "Party Tonight" Feat. Jean Grae
Black Sheep's Dres Joins With Blacksmith's Jean Grae To Take A Fun Look At Relationship Dynamics The Song:
"Party Tonight", featuring Jean Grae, is the latest single from Black Sheep's highly anticipated LP From The Black Pool Of Genius. The latest single demonstrates the long-standing power of the well-executed male/female duet. "It's a 'this feels great' jam," says Jean Grae. "You know, like a party that people actually have fun at - always needed, always timeless." And although Jean Grae says, "Of course it was an honor to record with Dres. The moment was kind of surreal for me," the feeling was mutual. "I had a lot of fun with Jean Grae in the studio," explains Dres. "She's quick-witted and pretty funny... it was nice to see her spit too. Her mechanics are tight. All the components were there from the beginning."
Produced by UrbanSoul Music Group, the track comes to life with the nostalgic crackle of a spinning vinyl, a reverb injected guitar melody, and a pocket rhythm section reminiscent of the soulful '70s. Dres and Grae draw on their verbal prowess to decorate the musical fixture with potent imagery of hip-hop's illustrious party scene, all the while remaining true to the actualities of reality. With a deft and poetic cadence Dres calls, "I'm only tryin' to party tonight/ I ain't sprung/ Elated, I'm a product that be native to the tongue/ Related, I'm the object that equated to the sun/ Just trying to seize the words to the songs you ain't sung," only to meet the humorous yet pithy response of Grae, "I shake it like the bar tender making my drink/ I'm a lady though/ Think before you play me close/ Party on further than Wayne, Garth/ harder than Richards, Keith". A mellow soul banger, "Party Tonight" is yet another triumphant track coming from a freshly groomed Black Sheep.
Fans can also check out Dres representing Black Sheep with the official From The Black Pool Of Genius album release party Tuesday, June 29th at Taj, where Dres will be performing tracks from the new album. Doors open for the free show at 8:00, and the concert starts at 10:00. Taj is located at 48 West 21st Street New York, NY 10010-6907 (212) 620-3033.
Black Sheep's From The Black Pool Of Genius is available June 29th, 2010 via Bum Rush Records.
It all began with a thundering baseline and an unmistakably classic phrase - "this or that." One of the most widely recognized songs in rap music history, the 1991 classic "The Choice is Yours" was hailed by VH1 in 2008 as one of the best rap songs of all time. The highly respected Queens emcee Dres, along with DJing partner-in-crime William "Mista Lawnge" McLean took the music industry by storm in the early 1990's as part of the groundbreaking collective Native Tongues. Penning such Billboard standouts as "Flavor of the Month" and "Strobelight Honey" for the duo's platinum-selling debut album A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing in 1992, Dres would continue to crank out the hits on the group's second release, Non Fiction. After a brief reunion with Mister Lawnge in 2000, Dres again set his sights on recording. He released the innovative online-only album 8WM/Novakane in 2007. Now he's back in the studio, writing the next chapter of his storied career. Dres' highly anticipated new project, From the Black Pool of Genius, out Spring 2010, promises to pair thought-provoking lyrics with astounding beats constructed by a corps of new and established beatmakers. They include Bean One, Showbiz, Tough Junkie, P. Locke, Urban Soul Music Group, and Willie Evans. He's also got an impressive line-up of guest stars, including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Rhymefest, AZ, Jean Grae, Rosie Perez, Psycho Les of The Beatnuts, and Tough Junkie, among others. Leading up to the release of his next full-length, Black Sheep have released a precursor EP, From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude, available now. From The Black Pool Of Genius will be available on June 29th.
Memphis rapper and former Three 6 Mafia member Lord Infamous is currently working on his fifth solo effort, Futuristic Rowdy Bounty Hunter, to be released via his own record label, Black Rain Entertainment. Due to the rapper recently suffering a heart attack and kidney failure, the release of the album has been pushed back, and a date is not yet set.
Featuring guests like T-Rock, Gangsta Boo, La Chat, Skinny Pimp, Nasty Nardo and more, Futuristic Rowdy Bounty Hunter is led by Lord Infamous, with II Tone and Enigma by his side.
Futuristic Rowdy Bounty Hunter will mark the fifth independent project from Lord Infamous since he broke away from the rap group Three 6 Mafia. His first solo project, Lord of Terror, was released as an underground tape in 1994, and his second album, The Man, The Myth, The Legacy, dropped in October of 2007. Last year saw the release of both After Sics and Blood Money.
As a founding member of Three 6 Mafia, Lord helped propel them to win an Academy Award in 2006. His violent, often horrific lyrics are one reason behind the “666” in the original name “Triple 6 Mafia.” Although he continues to collaborate with members of the group, he has recently been focusing on his own endeavors.
4-IZE's "Rollin' Like a Gee" Hits CMJ's Chart at #26
Atlanta, GA - "......My mouth magical" claims rapper 4-IZE on his recent street collabo with Gucci Mane, Spectacular Vernacular, AllHipHop.com's June 21st Heater of the Day, and he ain't lying. Some may find this collaboration surprising but the two have known each for years, both having recorded frequently at Atlanta's Upstairs Studio. Produced by 4-IZE's engineer, Morgan "The Mexican" Garcia, the song offers 'spectacular' wordplay from both, and not a 'burr' in it.
4-IZE's wordplay is hitting it big with the college radio audience too this week with his B-side single, Rollin' Like a Gee, hitting CMJ's chart at #26, making it third most added.
New Day, the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League-produced lead single from 4-IZE's upcoming album, AwesoMania, is also off to a great start having officially hit mixshow this week and garnering 1,200 spins a week on the internet. A true summer anthem, expect to hear alot of this one on your local station.
Last, but certainly now least, 4-IZE also recently launched his state-of-the-art new website, designed by the fabulous team at KYRO INK, whose work is frequently sought after by the majors. The site, http://www.4ize.com , features the incredibly outlandish graphics fans have come to expect from him via his album covers and is constantly updated via a spanky web crawler that automatically scans the web for all things video/audio related to 4-IZE and posts it. As 4-IZE himself would put it, now that's JESUS!
