From Audible Treats:

MP3: Black Sheep - "Party Tonight" Feat. Jean Grae

Black Sheep's Dres Joins With Blacksmith's Jean Grae To Take A Fun Look At Relationship Dynamics
The Song:

"Party Tonight", featuring Jean Grae, is the latest single from Black Sheep's highly anticipated LP From The Black Pool Of Genius. The latest single demonstrates the long-standing power of the well-executed male/female duet. "It's a 'this feels great' jam," says Jean Grae. "You know, like a party that people actually have fun at - always needed, always timeless." And although Jean Grae says, "Of course it was an honor to record with Dres. The moment was kind of surreal for me," the feeling was mutual. "I had a lot of fun with Jean Grae in the studio," explains Dres. "She's quick-witted and pretty funny... it was nice to see her spit too. Her mechanics are tight. All the components were there from the beginning."

Produced by UrbanSoul Music Group, the track comes to life with the nostalgic crackle of a spinning vinyl, a reverb injected guitar melody, and a pocket rhythm section reminiscent of the soulful '70s. Dres and Grae draw on their verbal prowess to decorate the musical fixture with potent imagery of hip-hop's illustrious party scene, all the while remaining true to the actualities of reality. With a deft and poetic cadence Dres calls, "I'm only tryin' to party tonight/ I ain't sprung/ Elated, I'm a product that be native to the tongue/ Related, I'm the object that equated to the sun/ Just trying to seize the words to the songs you ain't sung," only to meet the humorous yet pithy response of Grae, "I shake it like the bar tender making my drink/ I'm a lady though/ Think before you play me close/ Party on further than Wayne, Garth/ harder than Richards, Keith". A mellow soul banger, "Party Tonight" is yet another triumphant track coming from a freshly groomed Black Sheep.

Fans can also check out Dres representing Black Sheep with the official From The Black Pool Of Genius album release party Tuesday, June 29th at Taj, where Dres will be performing tracks from the new album. Doors open for the free show at 8:00, and the concert starts at 10:00. Taj is located at 48 West 21st Street New York, NY 10010-6907 (212) 620-3033.

Black Sheep's From The Black Pool Of Genius is available June 29th, 2010 via Bum Rush Records.

The Background:

It all began with a thundering baseline and an unmistakably classic phrase - "this or that." One of the most widely recognized songs in rap music history, the 1991 classic "The Choice is Yours" was hailed by VH1 in 2008 as one of the best rap songs of all time. The highly respected Queens emcee Dres, along with DJing partner-in-crime William "Mista Lawnge" McLean took the music industry by storm in the early 1990's as part of the groundbreaking collective Native Tongues. Penning such Billboard standouts as "Flavor of the Month" and "Strobelight Honey" for the duo's platinum-selling debut album A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing in 1992, Dres would continue to crank out the hits on the group's second release, Non Fiction. After a brief reunion with Mister Lawnge in 2000, Dres again set his sights on recording. He released the innovative online-only album 8WM/Novakane in 2007. Now he's back in the studio, writing the next chapter of his storied career. Dres' highly anticipated new project, From the Black Pool of Genius, out Spring 2010, promises to pair thought-provoking lyrics with astounding beats constructed by a corps of new and established beatmakers. They include Bean One, Showbiz, Tough Junkie, P. Locke, Urban Soul Music Group, and Willie Evans. He's also got an impressive line-up of guest stars, including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Rhymefest, AZ, Jean Grae, Rosie Perez, Psycho Les of The Beatnuts, and Tough Junkie, among others. Leading up to the release of his next full-length, Black Sheep have released a precursor EP, From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude, available now. From The Black Pool Of Genius will be available on June 29th.

Lord Infamous Suffers Heart Attack, New Album Pushed Back

From Krystal Schwegel:

For Immediate Release

Memphis rapper and former Three 6 Mafia member Lord Infamous is currently working on his fifth solo effort, Futuristic Rowdy Bounty Hunter, to be released via his own record label, Black Rain Entertainment. Due to the rapper recently suffering a heart attack and kidney failure, the release of the album has been pushed back, and a date is not yet set.

Featuring guests like T-Rock, Gangsta Boo, La Chat, Skinny Pimp, Nasty Nardo and more, Futuristic Rowdy Bounty Hunter is led by Lord Infamous, with II Tone and Enigma by his side.

Futuristic Rowdy Bounty Hunter will mark the fifth independent project from Lord Infamous since he broke away from the rap group Three 6 Mafia. His first solo project, Lord of Terror, was released as an underground tape in 1994, and his second album, The Man, The Myth, The Legacy, dropped in October of 2007. Last year saw the release of both After Sics and Blood Money.

As a founding member of Three 6 Mafia, Lord helped propel them to win an Academy Award in 2006. His violent, often horrific lyrics are one reason behind the “666” in the original name “Triple 6 Mafia.”  Although he continues to collaborate with members of the group, he has recently been focusing on his own endeavors.

4-IZE's "Rollin' Like a Gee" Hits CMJ's Chart at #26

From Nancy B:

4-IZE's "Rollin' Like a Gee" Hits CMJ's Chart at #26

Atlanta, GA - "......My mouth magical" claims rapper 4-IZE on his recent street collabo with Gucci Mane, Spectacular Vernacular,'s June 21st Heater of the Day, and he ain't lying. Some may find this collaboration surprising but the two have known each for years, both having recorded frequently at Atlanta's Upstairs Studio. Produced by 4-IZE's engineer, Morgan "The Mexican" Garcia, the song offers 'spectacular' wordplay from both, and not a 'burr' in it.

4-IZE's wordplay is hitting it big with the college radio audience too this week with his B-side single, Rollin' Like a Gee, hitting CMJ's chart at #26, making it third most added.

New Day, the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League-produced lead single from 4-IZE's upcoming album, AwesoMania, is also off to a great start having officially hit mixshow this week and garnering 1,200 spins a week on the internet. A true summer anthem, expect to hear alot of this one on your local station.

Last, but certainly now least, 4-IZE also recently launched his state-of-the-art new website, designed by the fabulous team at KYRO INK, whose work is frequently sought after by the majors. The site, , features the incredibly outlandish graphics fans have come to expect from him via his album covers and is constantly updated via a spanky web crawler that automatically scans the web for all things video/audio related to 4-IZE and posts it. As 4-IZE himself would put it, now that's JESUS!

NEOSONIC Blog - The Find Rewind

From K-Murdock:

NEOSONIC Blog - The Find Rewind

Earlier this spring i got asked to participate in hosting my first ever mixtape... but the even doper thing was the fact it was an ALL INSTRUMENTAL mixtape!  Now after some work recruiting producers, compiling songs & sequencing the final track list, my peoples at The Find Magazine proudly present "The Find Rewind" featuring exclusive instros from a plethora of producers including: Kev Brown, Dela, Headnodic (of Crown City Rockers), Kero One from Japan AND many MANY more beatmakers including yours truly!

Now, as you can see from the visual above, this is literally a mix-TAPE... like as in a cassette aka those often hissy, analog rectangular-things we used to play till they popped in our Walkmans or boomboxes! Unfortunately, the guys at The Find only pressed 100 copies of the tape up which were gone within the first week... earlier this month :(  I wished i had blogged about this in a more timelier fashion (i'll blame that on my move), however, the good news is that i plan on airing the WHOLE unedited mix as the feature in the July episode of Subsoniq "Instru-mentals", so stay tuned...

Michael Franti & Spearhead Announce New Album on August 24th

From Patrick Durkin:

Michael Franti & Spearhead return with their much anticipated album, THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE, on August 24th through Capitol Records/Boo Boo Wax. The album’s first singles are already gaining momentum at radio with “Shake It” hitting the Top 40 and Hot AC radio formats, and the album’s title track, “The Sound of Sunshine,” currently at #2 on the AAA charts after only five weeks at radio. THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE is Michael Franti & Spearhead’s seventh studio album and the follow-up to 2008’s Top 40 hit All Rebel Rockers. For a sneak peek at the THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE album cover, head to .

THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE was conceived after Franti was hospitalized for a ruptured appendix in August 2009. “Music is sunshine. It gives us new energy and a stronger sense of purpose. You can’t hold it in your hands, smell it, taste it or even see it, yet somehow just coming together and feeling these little vibrations that tickle our eardrums can somehow lift us all up out of our most difficult moments in life to unimaginable heights,” says Franti.

Franti and Spearhead have no doubt succeeded in creating perhaps what is their most cohesive, romantic and life-affirming album to date. THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE opens with the album’s title track – a breezy sing-a-long that seeks to “bottle that experience of waking up in the morning, pulling the blinds and seeing that there’s a sunny day in front of us,” explains Franti. It is this optimistic energy that flows throughout the record’s eleven songs from the happy groove of “Shake It” to the joyously anthemic “I’ll Be Waiting.”

The band began recording in Jamaica with legendary producers Sly and Robbie (Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana, No Doubt) as well as in Franti’s home in Bali and hometown of San Francisco. With the record still not complete, Franti decided to bring a mobile studio on the road with him while he toured with John Mayer this past winter. The album was finished in dressing rooms and hotel rooms along the way with Franti playing songs he had recorded earlier in the day to the audience that evening. THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE continues to showcase Franti’s desire to communicate directly with his fans.

Michael Franti is the creator and lead singer of Michael Franti & Spearhead. For over two decades, the Bay Area born Franti has been bringing our world exceptionally powerful, deeply felt music.  Franti first formed the punk band The Beatnigs while studying at the University of San Francisco, and later the far more hip hop-inflected The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. In the mid-Nineties, Franti created Spearhead, and increasingly in recent years, he’s found his own voice musically and his own organic brand of popular success. Franti’s impressive series of recordings have vividly reflected his status as a musical citizen of the world.

Franti & Spearhead will be touring throughout the summer. For tour dates, ticket information, official Michael Franti news and to check out the latest v-blogs on FrantiV, go to .
