Devo Spice Update - 9/7/2010

Hey everyone!

Got some cool stuff to talk about.  I’ll try not to be too wordy so you can get back to your game of Farmville or whatever.

--== INTERVENTION: THIS WEEKEND IN WASHINGTON DC ==--
Those of you in or near Washington DC this weekend should stop by Intervention (http://interventioncon.com), a new convention of internet culture and media.  There’s a big focus on web comics but they’re also having some music and that’s where I come in.  Well, me, Rob Balder, and Insane Ian.

We’ll be doing a round robin FuMP concert Friday evening from 5-7.  That’s the only concert for the weekend so don’t miss it if you’re coming.  Rob also has some panels during the weekend, including one for the launch of his new graphic novel Duel In The Somme.  They’re also showing some viral videos, having a War At Innsmouth Dance on Friday night, and my friends from Cosplay Burlesque will be performing Saturday night.

--== NEW LUKE SKI SONG FEATURING ME ==--
The Great Luke Ski recently mentioned he had an idea long ago for a parody of Run-DMC’s 1993 song “Down With The King” and was planning to now complete the song.  The parody was called “It’s Good To Be The King” and was a tribute to the great Mel Brooks.  When I found out about this I called Luke and demanded to appear on the song.

I’m happy to report that Luke agreed to my demands, the song is awesome, and no harm will have to come to his cat.  The song is now available over on The FuMP (http://www.thefump.com/fump.php?id=1334) and also features the vocal talents of Bud Sharpe from Possible Oscar and Insane Ian.

--== NARRATING AN AUDIO BOOK ==--
Adding another notch in the proverbial bedpost of my voice acting career a new audio book has launched on Hub Magazine narrated by me! Marco and the Red Granny is a new novella by Mur Lafferty; author of Heaven and Playing For Keeps (http://murverse.com).

In the story, the moon is now the artistic center of the universe thanks to an alien species that can combine the senses in their artwork in a way that humans simply can’t, and hire the best artists from Earth to help forge their craft.  Marco, a struggling graphic novelist, finally lands a patronage, but finds it’s not all it’s cracked up to be, and that the only friend he’s made, a tiny old woman who’s the star of a blood sports reality series called The Most Dangerous Game, has secrets of her own.

Episode 1 of Marco and the Red Granny is now available to listen to via Hub Magazine:

If you prefer to simply read the story Mur is also posting the text on her blog here:

--== ART FOR FUMP 22 ==--
It’s been a long time since I’ve done a real illustration, and since nobody stepped up to do the cover for The FuMP Volume 22 compilation CD I figured it was time.  I can’t believe it’s taken this long for me to do one, actually.

The CD is currently in production and should be shipping in a week or so.  But if you’d like a sneak peek at the artwork I did (inspired by Insane Ian’s song MvL which appears on the CD) check out my blog post here:

--====--

Well that’s all for now!  I promise I’ll get back to working on new music shortly.  This whole house thing has really screwed me up in more ways than one.

About Grey Matter:

Grey Matter consists of Illustrate and TEMPERMENTAL. One MC and one Producer. It's a formula that allows each member to showcase their individual craft and allows their music to have a consistent vibe. The group formed in 2001 in Orlando (Ozone), Florida and soon after they released their first single on vinyl "No Question b/c The Problem". It achieved regular rotation on college radio and was picked up by "Music Choice" for the cable TV hip-hop channel. In 2007, they completed a 40 city US tour with the very talented Solillaquists of Sound. They are currently working on music and performing. Outside of music both TEMP and Illa teach audio engineering at Full Sail University in Orlando.

Illustrate was born and raised in Central Florida and has been listening to hip hop since he was 8 years old. Influenced by early to mid 90's hip hop he started rapping when he was 14. Moving to Orlando when he was 21 to go to school he was given the job of Producer for an underground radio stations afternoon show. There he met most of the people involved in the local music scene. After earning the respect from the MC's in the city and re-connecting with TEMP (who first produced for illustrate when he was 17) while at school they formed Grey Matter in '01. Crediting everyone from every different genre within hip hop as his inspiration, he tries to give to people what he gets out of music.

TEMPERMENTAL has been making beats since 1991. He lives in the crates and literally has thousands of records in his studio. He was born in Central Florida and due to the south's lack of hip-hop, grew up listening to a combination of New York hip-hop (LL, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD etc) and Electro - Funk (Africa Bambataa, Planet Patrol, Egyptian Lover etc). He started making beats at the age of 13 by creating pause tapes (using a dual cassette deck to record parts of the beat from one cassette to another). At the age of 15 he bought his first drum machine and sampler (a Yamaha RY-30 and a Peavy SP). In 1995 he upgraded and bought an MPC 3000. Getting the MPC changed the method and focus of his beats and allowed him to take his production to the next level. Currently he makes beats with a combination of an MPC 1000, Acid Pro, Reason, etc etc. TEMP has been influenced by the same producers that most producers list (Premo, Pete Rock, Marley Marl, etc) but also allows himself to be influenced by artists outside of hip-hop. TEMP believes that you have to sometimes get inspiration outside of the genre in order to bring something new to the table.

Death Row Records, New Delaware Litigation Exposes Self Dealing

News sent to us courtesy of Onyx Media:

Death Row Records, New Delaware Litigation Exposes Self Dealing

Wilmington, Delaware USA, September 7, 2010 – There has been a surprising change in the weather in the ongoing Death Row Records owner dispute between the company’s former CEO/President Lara Lavi (note corrected spelling is Laura Lavi) and Canadian banker, Ron Ovenden who is also the Chairman of New Solutions Capital, the private lending company that loaned part of the money to purchase the Death Row Records and Suge Knight Publishing Assets in a California Bankruptcy Proceeding in January 2009.  On August 31, 2010 by electronic filing Laura Lavi filed a lawsuit against Wideawake Deathrow Entertainment LLC (“Deathrow”) to “compel inspection of books and records to investigate potential self-dealing and breaches of fiduciary duty by Ronald Ovenden ( http://www.newsolcapital.com/ ), a member and manager of the Death Row LLC.” Today, the registered agent for Deathrow was served with the complaint.

This new lawsuit comes after a succession of favorable court results for Ms. Lavi starting with the Canadian Court’s ruling on February 17, 2010 where Mr. Ovenden did not win confirmation that he has control of the Delaware LLC and instead Justice Campbell has sent the case to trial at the end of this year to determine if Mr. Ovenden rightfully removed Ms. Lavi.  Then in June 2010, Mr. Ovenden lost his onerous sanctions motion against Ms. Lavi when Judge Barbara Kapnick ruled that Ms. Lavi did not lie to the New York court.

What is at stake here is control of one of the worlds greatest urban music catalogs.  Death Row Records and Suge Knight Publishing which includes the music of multi platinum artists Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Tupac Shakur.  Despite being the “David” to Ron Ovenden/New Solutions Capital’s “Goliath”, Ms. Lavi appears to be tenaciously holding on to what seems to still be her desire to keep her promise to all the former Death Row artists when she publically stated last January 2009 that acquiring the Death Row Assets from bankruptcy would bring a “new day” for the artists and producers that made Death Row great.    These artists are all still waiting for that “new day.”

Death Row is distributed by E-1 Entertainment in North America and the lawsuit references E-1 as another possible source of the company’s books and records.

Explains Ms. Lavi’s Delaware Counsel David L. Finger of Finger & Slanina, “The Delaware lawsuit is the first step towards getting to the truth about what Mr. Ovenden and his company New Solutions Capital did with the $5million in advances Ms. Lavi raised to capitalize the Death Row LLC.  Only the Court of Chancery of the State of Delaware has jurisdiction over a complaint to compel inspection of a Delaware LLC’s books and records.  Ms. Lavi has every right to these documents as she is an owner and a managing member.”

Death Row’s President John Payne and New Solutions’ Managing Director, Robert Thompson-So continue to run the day to day operations for Death Row but neither could be reached for this story.  Ms. Lavi was not available for comment either.
