Kutiman - YouTube's DJ?

I'm aware that Kutiman's "Thru You" YouTube project has been circulating since the beginning of this month, but it was only been recently that I had the opportunity to experience his artistry.  Although the idea of dissecting YouTube videos and reconstructing them into an original track isn't the most innovative, Kutiman's execution remains effortless as he puts others who have taken on this challenge in the dust.

Kutiman's three month "Thru You" project consists of seven individual tracks/videos incorporating an extensive list of amateur YouTube videos that he sampled, cut, and edited on his own.  With his sensational talents, Kutiman deserves the moniker of "YouTube's DJ" as his videos have attracted well over a million hits so far.

"I'm New" is the most RapReviews appropriate and the most admired with its hip hop influence as Kutiman samples obscure videos including a cabasa and another with a cash register, as well as including an impressive freestyle and vocals.  Also, Kutiman includes the source YouTube videos he sampled, so for those of you who are further intrigued by his art, be sure to check them out to fully understand the project.

To think, Kutiman's "Thru You" project was originally sent to twenty of his friends and has now exploded worldwide.  With this in mind, Kutiman can be called the DJ Shadow of YouTube as he clearly deserves some praise for his artistry.

Foreign Legion to Release 'Night Moves' April 21st

From PR at

For immediate release!

Night Of The Living Def! Oakland, California

The cliche phrase "hip hop is dead" has been dismantled by Oakland California hip hop crew Foreign Legion with their new album, "Night Moves" which is dropping April 21st 2009 on Hungerstrike records! The 13 song, full length masterpiece figuratively kicks it's hip hop rivals in the nuts with soulful horns blasting in your face, and thick as honey basslines drenching your thirsty soul! Produced by Prozack Turner, Dj Flip,(Ireland)Dj Buzz(Austria)G. Koop,Oh No, Grandpa J and Introbeats out of Iceland, the album is exactly what the soundscape that is underground hip hop is hungry for! Recorded, written, and produced completely at night in three countries over ten months, "Night Moves" is sure to make noise in the nocturnal circles of the worldwide hip hop underground! "We wanted to make an album that represents some of our darker thughts, both literally and metaphorically, so we decided to experiment and do all the creating, recording and mixing at night" say Marc Stretch, lead emcee of Foreign Legion. Producer and fellow emcee of the crew, Prozack Turner had this to say, "Both Stretch and I were very busy in the daytime hours, with me working at the check cashing place and Stretch doing his day gig(Stretch is the daytime dj at a local San Francisco strip club)that the only time we had to work, was at night. Even when we recorded on tour, it was in the late hours. This album was 100% made at night" The group is releasing a single in late March, don't sleep!

Foreign Legion also just returned from this year's South By Southwest music festival in Austin ,Texas! The boys would like to thank all the fans who came through and helped burn the venues to the ground! Special thanks to Ravi, the manager of Ramada Limited for his patience regarding the noise and the naked cannonballs off the roof into the pool (who knew pizza could float?) and also to Sgt. Stephani for being cool about the "smoke" and open containers!

The Background:

Before making his entrance into hip-hop, Finale worked as an automotive engineer promising to one day follow his dream of becoming a rapper. Making the rounds at local Detroit open mics and emcee battles, Finale began to mingle with local talents like Guilty Simpson and One.Be.Lo. After emailing some joints back and forth with J Dilla, Finale finally met him backstage at the DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival), where Dilla introduced him to Madlib, saying that he was one of the best in the game. “It was an honor and definitely a defining moment," says Finale. After realizing his passion and talent for hip-hop, Finale decided to finally quit his day job, follow his true passion, and make music a full-time career. After a handful of Fat Beats released singles, an album released with European producer Spier 1200 as a part of The Rawkus 50, and numerous appearances on independent releases from Invincible, eLZhi and others, Finale's official debut LP, A Pipe Dream & A Promise, will be released in stores and online on Aptil 7th via Interdependent Media.

Black Milk - Dreams

From Audible Treats:

Black Milk - "Dreams"      03.23.2009
Bonus Web-Exclusive Track / Euro Tour Continues

Critical Praise for TRONIC:
"TRONIC takes Black Milk's sound and rhyming ability to levels that now appear limitless. This is an early entry for any of the multitudes of album of the year lists soon to appear." -

(March 23, 2009 - Brooklyn, NY) Only a few months removed from the release of his acclaimed album TRONIC last October, Black Milk is busier than ever and looking to make 2009 his most successful year yet. While staying in the public's eyes and ears with the debut of the video for the smash "Losing Out" and with his production for Colin Munroe's hit single "Piano Lessons," Black has spent the year's early months working overtime in the studio on various projects.

The much-anticipated self-titled full-length from Random Axe - the supergroup consisting of Black, Sean Price, and Guilty Simpson - is near completion and is slated to drop this summer on Duck Down Records. He's also been recording numerous tracks for Slum Village's forthcoming project, and recently completed the track "On the Grind" for KRS-One and Buckshot's new album, which includes a hook sung by superstar Mary J. Blige. Fittingly, Black is also producing his first full-length R&B album for Detroit chanteuse Melanie Rutherford (who appeared on "Bond 4 Life" from the TRONIC album), and chipping away at an instrumental project using samples culled from blaxploitation flicks. Never one to shy away from the mic for too long, Black Milk recently recorded the brand new solo track "Dreams" as a web exclusive.

Black Milk started his tour last weekend with eLZHi for a 13-date European tour in support of TRONIC and The Preface, including a sold-out date for his London debut at Cargo last Saturday, March 21.

Tour Dates:

Thurs-March 19 Mainz, GERMANY TBA
Fri-March 20 Manchester, UK Mint Lounge
Sat-March 21 London, UK Cargo
Tues-March 24 Heidelberg, GERMANY Karlstor
Wed-March 25 Berlin, GERMANY Cassiopeia

Thurs-April 9 Biel, SWITZERLAND Coupole
Fri-April 10 Zurich, SWITZERLAND TBA
Sat-April 11 Cologne, GERMANY Luxor

The Background:

In only a few short years, Black Milk has quickly become one of underground hip-hop's foremost ambassadors. Realizing his vast reservoir of talent, both independent and mainstream artists looked to Black to give their albums a raw underground sound. Black has since produced and appeared on tracks for an impressive roster of hip hop artists including Genius/GZA, Busta Rhymes, Pharoahe Monch, Kidz in the Hall, Kardinal Offishall, Guilty Simpson, and Strange Fruit Project, among others. Most recently, Black released two albums, The Set Up with Fat Ray and Black Milk Presents Caltroit with Bishop Lamont. Black also handed nearly all the production on elZhi's The Preface, an album that is making many critics' Top 10 lists for 2008 and bringing serious attention to Detroit's music scene. Black also produces and rhymes as a member of the ground Random Axe with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson and will release a full-length album in early 2009. TRONIC is available on CD, vinyl, and digitally via Fat Beats Records now.

Mr. Beatz - A Triple Threat

Mr. Beatz has always been inspired by the greats. Whether it was the lyrical skills of Big Daddy Kane, Rakim and Kool G Rap, the DJing prowess of DJ Jazzy Jeff and Red Alert, or the production mastery of DJ Premier, Pete Rock and The Bomb Squad, he recognized the best of the best and wanted to do something to rank right up there with them. Now a proficient emcee, DJ and producer, Mr. Beatz says the most important thing people should know about his work is the initial reason it all began. “I always have to mention that I'm a fan first,” he explains, “because that always keeps my love strong for the culture and all of its elements and characteristics.” After a short hiatus from making music Mr. Beatz returned to the booth and the boards a little over two years ago and this week I caught up with the New York native, whose latest video can be seen on Video Music Box, to find out what he’s been up to.
