Artist: Blaq Poet f/ N.O.R.E.
Label: Year Round/Fat Beats Records
"I don't give a fuck, nigga hate me/Cause God's the only one that can judge me/Y'all bitch-ass niggaz ain't worth my hate/Plus, I love to chop off the head of the snake." Strong words from a veteran Poet in the hip-hop game. For those who haven't kept track, Blaq Poet goes all the way back to the 1980's, a veteran of hip-hop's infamous Bridge Wars headlined by KRS-One and MC Shan. More recently Poet could be heard as a member of the oft-overlooked grimy underground group Screwball, but his forthcoming album "Tha Blaqprint" is only the second solo album of his career (not counting the seminal PHD album "Without Warning" where he shared billing with Hot Day). Now signed to DJ Premier's imprint Year Round, the beat and scratching of "Hate" are so GangStarr you expect Guru to drop in for a cameo at any second. It's a little odd to hear Noreaga flowing on such a beautiful beat. To his credit N.O.R.E. drops one of his most sensible raps: "Hate is a drug and most niggaz love to use it/Addicted to it, so they abuse it/Hate from the heart, they hate from within/And not realizin they hatin they own skin." Both artists sound inspired by the track and dropping a Main Source sample in the opening and chorus gives it that little extra bit of flavor to push the song over the top. Even if you slept on Poet for the last 20 years don't sleep on "Hate" - this one is HOT.
