Though i didn't learn how to properly say his name (NEW-Jah- BESS) till the homie Substantial, a frequent collaborator of Nujabes, told me 3 years ago, i always knew his music verbatim- down to every last nuance and subtlety! I personally likened him to jazz legend
Ahmad Jamal, for their common use of "spacing" in their music. Albeit, his productions could come off as "simple" or "basic" to some, me and his thousands of other fans out there would probably agree that the complexity of his beats was more inherent via the emotion of his tracks, and most times the feeling i got was that of either sadness or joy or both... one of my favorite pieces that he made, which i feel captures that duality and the soul of his music, is called "Reflection Eternal". I have played this song during a myriad of events- breaks up, mourning a loss of a loved one & even during a drive to my aunt's house for Christmas with my family a few years ago... and it fit the vibe of all three perfectly, listen...
I could go on & on about how amazing Nujabes is and how much of a worldwide influence his music has, but i think i'm gonna pay my respects through sound and dedicate my next instrumental show to him as a proper way to say "Domo Arigato" Nujabes. Rest in Beats...
