From Fly Gypsy:
We are excited to share with you our feature in the Source Magazine (the April-May 2010 issue that just hit the stands). While we are certainly not putting the Source above your support, we wanted to share this with you because (1) this is our first feature in a major print publication and (2) it it because of your support over the past months that the Source gave us such a strong endorsement!
No song pitches this time around. Just wanted to share the news and say THANK YOU!
Alexei & Kom
Here's the article:
Fly Gypsy’s admiration for hip-hop dates back to their adolescence. Russian producer Alexei became a mixtape aficionado, while Jamaica-bred MC Kowboy Kom embraced the ’90s rap scene. The microphone fiend would soon meet his PNC in a cipher at DC’s popular Bar Nun open mic spot, where the duo clicked. “Though from different cultures, we grew up on the same music, from the Fugees to Nina Simone, Nirvana to Buju Banton,” explains Kom.
The tandem’s The Vodka & Rum Mixtape became a staple across nationwide dorms in ‘09, tallying up downloads from mixtape giant datpiff.com. Critical acclaim soon followed. On their latest LP, Change for a Dollar, which features college radio favorite “2 Step” and the alternative -infused “Go,” stimulating diversity amid today’s musical medium was a no brainer. “We are musicians, first and foremost, and we rock hard,” says one-man band Alexei.
Surpassing expectations, Fly Gypsy set their own standards for success. “As for what we’re trying to accomplish, long-term we’re shooting for Jay-Z/Kanye West/Lil Wayne level in terms of popularity and, probably, more importantly, longevity and impact. We want to leave a mark, take hip-hop in new directions.” As leaks from their FG*XL:remixtape surface, and their galvanizing stage shows continue to gain mass appeal, Fly Gypsy illustrates that they’re way above the clouds.
