Review by Susan 'susiQ' Kim

Artist: Michael McDonald
Title: “Love T.K.O.,” “Walk on By,” and “Higher and Higher”
Label: Universal Records

Obviously, Michael McDonald is far from being considered “rap,” but has been known for many years as a popular R&B and soul singer, often described as the “blue-eyed soul singer.” Michael McDonald is most recognized for his singing with The Doobie Brothers as his connection with rap doesn’t end here. His previous works have been sampled by many rap artists including Warren G and Nate Dogg who used “I Keep Forgettin’” on the popular “Regulate.” Jadakiss also sampled the track for his 2001 track “Kiss Is Spittin’.” Select tracks including “Love T.K.O,” “Walk On By,” and “Higher and Higher” are featured from his latest album “Soul Speak” which is set to release in March 2008. His new album of soul “cover” songs features some well known tracks such as “Love T.K.O” from Teddy Pendergrass and “Higher and Higher” from Jackie Wilson. With a more contemporary sound and signature baritone voice, his music brings a new twist on older soul tracks while introducing three new tracks of his own on the album as well. This five-time Grammy winner recognizes and relives songs once revered by many while not forgetting the essence to the original music.
