I must say I'm pleasantly surprised by the results of the vote this week. I thought for sure my favorite candidate of the four would be overshadowed by Fat Joe (no that's not a weight joke) given his song was more recent and probably better known to our audience. I also didn't believe the winner had ever gotten much credit as a rap artist. His Wikipedia page is about the bare minimum you can have for an entry. It doesn't have his birthday, nor any biographical information of any kind, and other than mentioning he was discovered by Sean Combs (Puff Daddy) no explanation of how he even got into the music business. That's pretty weak.
The song he won with, sampling Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real," that's anything BUT weak. It's one of my favorite rap songs from 1990. I could swear he was even on a "Pump It Up!" episode with Sista D (Dee Barnes) that year. Incidentally since we still don't have a good public domain photo of the winner (because as noted his Wikipedia page SUCKS) I've chosen to at least feature the lovely Mary J. Blige in this article, who sang the hook on his song.
And the winner is...
Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real." Who sampled it better? Place your votes now! #WSIB#hiphop
