Burgeoning D.C. Genre Combines Dub-Step, Reggaeton, And More
Only a year ago in Washington D.C. DJ Dave Nada slowed down the track "Moombah" by DJ Chuckie & Silva Cuomo to 108 beats per minute. This alteration began to "sound like Reggaeton's weird little cousin," says fellow genre pioneer Cam Jus. Nada slammed the two words, Moombah and Reggaeton, together and a new genre was born. Moombahton, says track producer Cam Jus, is "mid-tempo global bass music for the universe. It's a sonic marriage of electronic dance music (House, Techno, and dubstep) with Latin/Island music." The Cam Just remix for Kokayi's "Chanticleer," one of the most lauded singles from his recent album, Robots & Dinosaurs, incorporates all the elements mentioned. The opening synth part even features 8-bit sounds while the reversed keyboard sets the tone for the remixed track. For Kokayi, a DC native himself who actually first heard about the genre last year while at a hotel in France, branching out into new and innovative genres is key. "Innovation, being the key tenet of hip-hop music, has always inspired," explains Kokayi, "which results in me trying to incorporate new sounds and styles it into what I do, filtered through my own circumstances."
