“Lil’ mama she so bad, and you know she got that ass
Spin around yo’ block real fast like I’m Flash”

Yeah I’m not the “Flash” that Treez Lowkey is talking about. He’s talking about Barry Allen, or if he’s really old school, he might be talking about Jay Garrick. “Space Journal” is a 2019 album where Treez was trying to break into a trap rap scene that was already incredibly crowded and would only get more so in the years to come. “Big Nuts” is right at the level I’d expect for a newcomer back then. No better and no worse. Not even one iota of difference. It’s not offensive unless lines like “nigga ain’t worried ’bout your bitch” or “all of these hoes, they legit” get under your skin for their misogyny. I’m pretty numb to somebody gassing up their ego by acting like they get a lot of pussy.

Seven years and 600 views on YouTube later I’m wondering… did it work? Well he’s still uploading music to SoundCloud (and using it to tell people he’s got “more heat” on YT) so at least he’s still in the game. Fair play to him for not giving up. He put more effort into this than most rappers at this level do, including filming videos for tracks like “Mop.” Since it was done before an era where AI could churn out AI slop clips for YouTube channels, I give him full credit for taking a concept and turning it into a visual. The track has a background melody that intrigues me with its different synth layers, and since it’s self-produced, props for that too.

Unfortunately he can’t avoid the most generic pitfall of the genre — talking too much about getting your freak on. I’m sure Treez low key gets plenty of power U but for real “Get Nasty” doesn’t tell anybody anything that makes him Usher in the bedroom. Where’s the lyrics to make all those bitches he talks about horny? “Hit it from the back like a dog (hey hey) stand on that mic oh so tall/never trust a hoe, that’s the law.” I think that would be a turnoff if anything.

At almost three times the stream numbers of “Big Nuts” though it’s at least more successful. That’s probably because more people want to hear about freaky sex than to hear how big some dude’s nuts are. Treez Lowkey gets a pass because “Space Journal” is not the worst thing I’ve heard today, this week, this month, this year, or this decade. It’s just run-of-the-mill and doesn’t whet my appetite to hear more of what he’s got on SoundCloud or YouTube right away.
