In no way am I saying it’s wrong for producer Xavier Lamar Dotson, better known as Zaytoven, to encourage and support his son ZAYSKII in a musical career. If anything I’m happy they have such a close bond that ZAYSKII wants his dad to produce his songs. He already knows pops made chart topping hits for everyone from Usher to 21 Savage. How much of a flex must it be to tell your friends your dad is legit famous and that he’s producing your album? He’s probably got some people BIG MAD at him. Too bad — they need to get over their jealousy. If you don’t like that ZAYSKII caught a break because of his father, then go out there and hustle and make something of your own. Channel that energy into creativity instead of negativity.
As long as I’m being reasonable about “Only One,” I’m also happy this is only a six song EP. If you’re going to put your own children in the spotlight, starting slow to build a career isn’t a bad idea. Doing too much too fast is either going to burn them out or make the haters even more mad. It’s hard to even hate if you tried when the entire presentation is over in 12 minutes. I go on walks longer than that. I’ve played a single game of Tetris for longer than that (many times). That’s only one-fifth of a hour. It’s barely even enough time to get an impression of ZAYSKII. I still did though.
Admittedly “Talk Is Cheap” and so is a review you read online for free. What is ZAYSKII bringing to the table? Well, his dad makes great beats, so this song sounds like a hot new Future track. ZAYSKII’s vocals even sound like a younger, less seasoned Future. Okay… what about the lyrics? “If you’re not talking money, why you talking to me?” “How you gon’ flex on me if you ain’t got no racks?” Well then. Young sir, whose money do you have? Is it yours? I’m sure you can “flex” on anyone you like, but a lot of that is due to whose son you are. Just being honest SKII, not hating. Hearing you sound like everyone else, talk like everyone else, and act like everyone else doesn’t bode well for your career. “Only One” sounds fine but brings nothing new to the dance.
