In the United States we know this game as Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Beach Machine, but in Japan the Puyo Puyo franchise started as a spin off to the dungeon crawling RPG known as Madō Monogatari (Sorcery Saga). Given that series never got localized outside of Japan it’s not surprising that Compile and Sega would reskin it with Sonic the Hedgehog characters, but in time Puyo Puyo would become well enough known here that neither knowledge of the game’s origins nor a reskin would be necessary.

At this point the Puyo Puyo series has far exceeded its starting point in recognition and popularity, but it’s nice to go back to close to where it all began now and then, especially given there is no language barrier to this game.
