I’m sure Kazuo Morita is a legendary board game designer, or Japanese chess (shougi) player, or perhaps both. Morita Shougi PC is named after him, so he’s clearly involved in SOME way, but unfortunately there are some huge drawbacks to this game despite his influence. Much like Star Wars Chess, the animations when you move pieces are painfully slow, and selecting the pieces would be easier on an ACTUAL personal computer, and the biggest problem is personal — I just don’t comprehend shougi!

I can handle a chess board with an eight by eight grid and pieces I know, but on this nine by nine board I have no idea what I’m doing, and when I make wrong moves and get warnings in Japanese I’m unable to decipher what to do instead. Perhaps this is a great shougi game if you know the rules, but even with that said I have to believe there are better versions of shougi than this.
