“I do a lot of drugs, I am sorry but that’s a fact
[…] Hold up, I just took a hit before the verse”

Dear Mr. Skies, with respect, tell me something I don’t already know. “Out Ur Body Music” is the latest in an ongoing series of releases that reflects how little Skies wants to connect with reality. I’m going to take the unusual step here of saying that’s not a problem in and of itself. Tha Alkaholiks spent every album trying to get as inebriated as possible. Cypress Hill has made marijuana inseparable from their brand and you can find multiple songs like “I Wanna Get High” on each record. I’m not here to shame people for popping pills, pouring lean, rolling blunts or dropping tabs. As long as you don’t do something that harms others (driving under the influence for example) you do you. It’s your life.

It’s entirely right for Lil Skies to say he’s “Misunderstood,” whether the song is in ALL CAPS or not (no cap I’m tired of track titles that seem to be shouting at the listener). He can sing it to us on the song all day long. He can even tell us “I’ma always keep it G/I ain’t never been no bitch/All you niggaz been pussy” in the verse. If he wants the listener to understand that, I appreciate him clarifying his position. I appreciate his honesty about his recreational drug use. I’m prepared to take Skies at face value on all of this even if he’s projecting a larger than life persona for his audience on songs like “Pivot” about his trapping rap life.

Out Ur Body Music” is truth in advertising. I don’t think he’s making up how much he loves getting fucked up nor how much he feels the need to flex on his haters. Here’s the $64,000 question — what about that makes Lil Skies interesting? As previously discussed on this site he looks and sounds like the prototype of what a commercially successful rapper is supposed to be in the modern era, right down to the plethora of facial tattoos that he sports. Being “real” isn’t enough.

A lot of things are real. Puppies are real. Rainbows are real. Do you want an album about puppies and rainbows? Okay maybe from a pop star but I don’t know that I want to hear a rapper do that. Then again it would certainly stand out from Lil Skies, and that’s my problem with this album. No matter how real Skies is, he really just sounds like everybody else doing this shit right now; conversely, everybody else really sounds like him. The same topics, look, habits, and swagger. There’s just nothing to hold my interest. At least it’s only 24 minutes long.
